Addressing the challenges of resource scarcity and seizing opportunities for sustainable development

Release time:2024-07-05 09:54:00
In recent years, due to the limitations of global forest resources and the uncertainty of international market supply, the price of wood pulp has fluctuated greatly, bringing considerable cost pressure to Chinese paper companies. At the same time, the shortage of domestic wood resources has also limited the production capacity of wood pulp, resulting in an increasing proportion of dependence on imported wood pulp year by year.

Challenges Faced

1、 Rising raw material costs
When the price of wood pulp rises, companies need to pay more to purchase the same amount of wood pulp, which directly increases production costs. In a market with slow demand growth, it is difficult for companies to fully pass on the increased costs to consumers, and rising wood pulp prices may lead to a decrease in the company's profit margin. Even if companies try to increase product prices to compensate for rising costs, the market may be sensitive to this, leading to a decrease in sales. In this situation, companies may face a "dilemma": either accept a decrease in profit margins or face a decrease in sales.

2、 Unstable supply chain
Relying on imported wood pulp means that Chinese paper companies are constrained by the supply situation and price changes in the international market. Any turbulence in the international market, such as policy changes in exporting countries, trade disputes, transportation disruptions, etc., may directly affect the supply and cost of domestic wood pulp. When wood pulp prices rise, companies may face the risk of increased production costs and decreased profit margins. When the price of wood pulp drops, although the cost decreases, the instability of the market may also cause companies to be afraid of large-scale procurement and miss the opportunity to save costs. To cope with unstable supply, companies may need to maintain high inventory levels to ensure production continuity.

3、 Environmental pressure increases
With the increasing emphasis on environmental protection by the country, the environmental requirements for the paper industry are becoming increasingly strict, and enterprises need to invest more resources to meet environmental standards. In order to comply with the new environmental standards, paper companies need to transform their production processes and adopt more environmentally friendly production technologies and raw materials. For example, improving wastewater treatment facilities, adopting biotechnology to treat wastewater, and using cleaner energy to reduce pollution caused by coal combustion. Strict environmental standards have increased the cost of papermaking, requiring companies to invest more funds in upgrading and renovating.

Opportunities and coping strategies

Improving the self-sufficiency rate of raw materials by developing domestic wood planting and wood pulp production capacity, increasing the self-sufficiency rate of raw materials, and reducing dependence on imported wood pulp.
02 Technological innovation and research and development of new technologies for alternative raw materials, using non wood pulp materials such as bamboo pulp and waste paper pulp to replace wood pulp, reducing raw material costs, and improving resource utilization efficiency.
03 Industrial upgrading and structural adjustment promote the optimization of industrial structure, eliminate outdated production capacity, develop high value-added products, and improve the overall profitability of the industry.
04 International Cooperation and Diversified Layout Strengthen cooperation with international wood pulp suppliers, diversify raw material import channels, and reduce supply chain risks.

Resource constraints pose severe challenges to the development of China's paper industry, but at the same time provide opportunities for industry transformation and upgrading. Through efforts in improving self-sufficiency in raw materials, technological innovation, industrial upgrading, and international cooperation, the Chinese paper industry is expected to find new development paths in resource constraints and achieve sustainable development.
